Study of Green Buildings

Activity 4:  Study of Green Buildings
Students along with their partner school make a comparative study of traditional buildings and Green Buildings and then make a survey on how Green their school building is and exchange their findings via mail or blog.

Introduction to concept of green buildings:  Green Architecture

How green is the school building - campus walk through with the Architect:  Students interacted with the Architect of Reqelford International School to understand the materials used and the concepts of green building included in the design of the school.  The students were also shown the process for rain water harvesting in the school campus.

Survey on Green Buildings:

Students conduct a survey using a questionnaire to compare traditional buildings and green buildings.

Questionnaire used to survey the school building: Green Buildings Survey

  Survey of Reqelford International School:

Students in Vermont had a guest speaker today.  Erika Dolan is our Food Services Manager.  She has built a green house, called an Earthship.  A link to the concept is found here.  Erika shared with us how she and her husband built their house out of tires, recycled bottles and cans, wood, the earth, and a lot of hard work.  All of the electricity for the house comes from solar panels, and all of the heat from a small woodburning stove.  (We need a lot of heat here in Vermont, so that is pretty incredible).  The water is recycled rain water.  Here are some of the photos of her house, and the process of building it:

  1. How did you figure out how green your school is? Do you guys have many green buildings with plants on them? Why did you study more ancient buildings than green buildings?

  2. -- The questionnaire on the school building was filled in by the construction and operations manager of the school. We found that few concepts like rain water harvesting, water treatment plant are in place. Other than this, the design of the building is such that all rooms are well ventilated and we do not need to use lights during the day. However, there is no recycling of waste - we will make an initiative towards the same. Could you also post the completed questionnaire for your school building?
-- The awareness of green buildings is increasing in our country and roof gardens are becoming more common.
-- The project aims at studying the changes in architecture over time. Ancient buildings were studied for history and culture and Green buildings were studied to understand the current focus of architecture. Our students were surprised to realize that ancient structures are good examples of green buildings. We will post images of our models soon.
